Albert Hammond Jr. (né Hammond III; born April 9, 1980) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter and music producer. He is most famous for his role as rhythm and lead guitarist, as well as occasional keyboard player and backing vocalist, in the American rock band The Strokes. He is the son of singer-songwriter Albert Hammond.
Five years and a stint in rehab separate Albert Hammond Jr. from his last solo release but the Strokes guitarist is back with a brand new EP. Hammond talked to Rolling Stone about going through the songwriting process while sober: Weirdly enough, you’re more creative. I feel OK being myself. I feel comfortable to sit and sing embarrassing melodies before finding one. I don’t mind going through the process. The new EP sounds like a blend of Phoenix and early-era Strokes and is probably the strongest release associated with the indie rock staple in a few years.

Hammond, J. s voice is immediately striking. Here, and on about 90% of the EP, he sings with no effects to aid, muddle, or distort his singing. It’s a jarring change of pace, but one that’s much appreciated. On Cooker Ship he goes full-on frontman, his vocal chords straining to reach their uppermost register during the anthemic chorus. This adds a personality and warmth that were less apparent on previous releases. AHJ hits the market via Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records, and you can feel the guiding hand of The Strokes’ frontman on the EP’s razor sharp production.

Albert Louis Hammond Jr. (né Hammond III; born April 9, 1980) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, music producer and fashion designer. He is the son of singer-songwriter Albert Hammond (best known for his 1972 hit single "It Never Rains in Southern California"). Hammond Jr. released his debut album Yours To Keep in 2006 and followed up with ¿Cómo Te Llama? in 2008 and his EP, AHJ in 2013
Perhaps not coincidentally, Hammond’s new EP sticks to the narrowest of . Where 2006’s Yours to Keep and 2008’s ¿Cómo te Llama? presented homespun interpretations of Hammond’s most iconic inspirations (John Lennon, the Beach Boys, Bob Marley), on AHJ he mines a more easily attainable influence: his own band circa 10 years ago.
On AHJ, there’s not a bad apple in the admittedly small bunch. It’s 15 minutes of music from a guy who is finally comfortable with himself, and that’s clearly doing his music justice. 68. Running a mere five songs and 15 minutes, AHJ is a wholly fat-free effort that favors tight, snappy, emotionally direct songcraft over the genre experiments and instrumental excursions of ¿Cómo Te Llama?
