Cabaret Voltaire - The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord FLAC album

The band formed in Sheffield in 1973 and experimented widely with sound creation and processing. These early experiments are documented on the triple album CD set Methodology (Mute 2002). They eventually turned to live performance, often sharing the bill with Joy Division.

Named after a radical right-wing American organization - and possibly for that reason simply retitled The Arm of the Lord in the States - Covenant, self-produced by the group at its longtime studio Western Works, is something of a curious release. While not much like Code and the group's absolute nadir, Groovy, Laidback and Nasty, Covenant still subtly indicates the band's incipient spiral into fairly unremarkable late-eighties mediocrity

Hasirri
Harsher and heavier than people give it credit for: Mallinder's rasps and croaks a lot of his vocals, the beats are unrelentingly tough and clattering while scorched synths and disembodied samples ricochet inside the mix like shrapnel. That they manage to wrest some semblance of vaguely accessible song-writing out of this monster is a marvel, as melodies chatter along with all the airy charm of a neon sign in a bad neighbourhood. Charles Manson murmurs some stuff between tracks and the whole thing rumbles along in a generally disconcerting way. Mutant cyber funk at its best, the last great industrial-strength album by the Cabs before they explored dreamy electronica.
