Although it is billed as a Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges album, Side by Side is a 1959 album mostly under the leadership of Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington's alto saxophonist for many years. Ellington only appears on three of this album's tracks. The album places Hodges at the fore, backing him with piano by Ellington or Billy Strayhorn and providing other accompaniment by well-known jazz figures like Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Jo Jones.

Side By Side: A Celebration of Service is a first-of-its-kind event honoring military service. The two-part event on Saturday, May 25, will honor Northwell’s commitment to veterans and their families, and celebrate their service and sacrifice throughout the years. As the pinnacle event during NYC Fleet Week 2019, Side By Side will be a fun-filled day of musical performances, military exhibits, inspirational conversation and more at Rockefeller Center
Like its companion album, Back to Back, Side by Side has a loose, jam session feel, with all the soloists stretching out. Hodges is in top form throughout, while Edison and Webster man their spots just fine. Highlights include the sveltely swinging "Going Up" and Hodges' bluesy closer, "You Need to Rock. A must for fans of vintage combo swing.
Now I stand by your side Oh, on our own time. Oh, we’ll be alright As long as we stay side by side From the coldest nights to warmer degrees We’ll get by You and I, side by side. And so, now I go down all these roads With you, my home And now, I’ll keep you close I hope you know- I love you most. So here I walk by your side Oh, on our own time. Oh, we’ll be alright As long as we stay side by side.
