The Chemical Brothers are an English electronic music duo composed of Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons, originating in Manchester in 1989. Along with The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and other fellow acts, they were pioneers at bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture. They achieved widespread success when their second album Dig Your Own Hole topped the UK charts in 1997. In the United Kingdom they have had six number one albums and 13 top 20 singles, including two number ones. On 7 April 1997, The Chemical Brothers released their second album, Dig Your Own Hole. It was recorded at the band's own south London studio, with the title taken from graffiti on the wall outside.

How The Chemical Brothers Took On Britpop And The 60s With ‘Dig Your Own Hole’. Building on their debut album, The Chemical Brothers’ ‘Dig Your Own Hole’ represents the zenith of their big beat take on the all-conquering Britpop. Published on. April 7, 2019.

The Chemical Brothers’ debut album broke big in the duo’s native England, but with the 1997 follow-up, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons became the first electronic act to achieve full-fledged stardom in the . Without abandoning the big-beat sound they’d already become known for, the Chems expanded their breakbeat-based template to include psychedelic rock, with the. help of vocalists Beth Orton and Noel Gallagher, some carefully curated ‘60s samples and a heady heap of tripped-out textures. Dig Your Own Hole The Chemical Brothers.

Dig Your Own Hole' was perhaps not the best electronic album of the 1990s. But there is an argument to be made that it was the most representative, an album that united many of the dance music trends of the decade, while simultaneously blazing brilliant new trails for other acts to follow. With the release of their debut album, 1995’s ‘Exit Planet Dust’, The Chemical Brothers were still seen in many quarters as representing the lingering remnants of big beat: a fun, if rather shallow, mid ’90s dance phenomenon that combined rock music structures with electronic production

This album is dead-on focused; the Chemical Brothers would never again sound so assured. The best techno albums are the ones that keep the vocals to a minimum. On Dig Your Own Hole, only "Setting Son" serves as an actual song with lyrical structure, the other ten songs are loose and adventurous. The reason why Dig Your Own Hole is techno's opera is because of the way it starts, the way it continues, and the way it finishes.
