Biography by Jason Ankeny. Singer/songwriter known for her broad, melismatic vocals as well as her blend of pop styles with jazz and folk.

Phoebe Snow (born Phoebe Ann Laub; July 17, 1950 – April 26, 2011) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known for her 1975 song "Poetry Man". She was described by The New York Times as a "contralto grounded in a bluesy growl and capable of sweeping over four octaves. Snow was born in New York City in 1950, and raised in a musical household in which Delta blues, Broadway show tunes, Dixieland jazz, classical music, and folk music recordings were played around the clock.

See All. It Looks Like Snow.

Phoebe Snow, a bluesy singer, guitarist and songwriter who had a defining hit of the 1970s with Poetry Man but then largely dropped out of the spotlight to care for her disabled daughter, has died. Snow, who was nominated for best new artist at the 1975 Grammys, died on Tuesday morning in Edison, New Jersey, from complications of a brain haemorrhage she suffered in January 2010, said Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative. Hit-bound Poetry Man took the record to No4 on the album charts, but her success was uneasy. There are turning points in everyone's life where you decide if you're going to sink or swim. My insecurity wasn't serving me well at all. It was really a stumbling block," she told Associated Press in 1989. Rumours abounded that Jackson Browne was Poetry Man. "No, no. It's somebody you wouldn't know.

PHOEBE SNOW, April 26 Born Phoebe Laub, the bluesy singer/songwriter skyrocketed to fame in 1974 with the chart-topping hit "Poetry Man" but soon faded from the spotlight to care for her disabled daughter. In 2010, Snow suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and slipped into a coma. Video: Phoebe Snow performs "Poetry Man". Snow's manager, Sue Cameron, said the singer endured bouts of blood clots, pneumonia and congestive heart failure since her stroke. The loss of this unique and untouchable voice is incalculable," Cameron said. Occasionally I put an album out, but I didn't like to tour, and they didn't get a lot of label support," she told the Chronicle. But you know what? It didn't really matter because I got to stay home more with Valerie, and that time was precious.
