L'Histoire du soldat (The Soldier's Tale) is a theatrical work "to be read, played, and danced" (lue, jouée et dansée) by three actors and one or several dancers, accompanied by a septet of instruments. The piece was conceived by Igor Stravinsky and Swiss writer C. Ramuz based on a Russian folk tale (The Runaway Soldier and the Devil) drawn from the collection of Alexander Afanasyev.

Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz was born in Lausanne in 1878. However, his parents were from the rural area nearby and Ramuz felt more attachment to the Vaud rural area than to the city. He took a degree in classics and then started a career as a teacher but, after being ill, he moved to Paris to do a doctorate, which he abandoned to take up a literary career. Helped by Edouard Rod, he published his first novel, Aline, in 1905. Charles-Ferdinand RamuzRamuz, Charles dinand Ramuz (in French) Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz (in French) Fondation C.
