Aside from requesting the writ in water epitaph, Keats did not lament his coming end or curse his enemies on his deathbed. If anything, he lamented his continued life. He wrote to a friend of leading a posthumous existence, and complained in the same terms to Severn, who wrote that Keats would sometimes weep when he awoke and found himself still living. This short life was so imbittered by discouragement & sickness that he desired these words to mark his grave: ‘Here lies one whose name is writ in water. Time having reversed this sentence his friends and admirers now inscribe his name in marble. But the original wording endures.

John Keats (31 October 1795 – 23 February 1821). John Keats is buried in the Protestant Cemetery, Rome, Italy. His grave is in a quiet corner close to the Pyramid. Shelley is also buried in this cemetery. Keats died on the 23 February, 1821 aged only 25. He requested that only the phrase: Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water be inscribed on his headstone
In the better known form 'writ in water' they appeared in Keat's Poetic Works, 1821 '. The 'here' in question is Rome. Keats travelled to Rome and died there, aged just 25, in February, 1821. He told his friend Joseph Severn that he didn't want his name to appear on his tombstone, but merely this line: "Here lies one whose name was writ in water.
