Listening back to a music he had created in which strict adherence to a score was necessary for the players, Feldman found himself, and what he found was known only to him. But listeners are set free to wander these long hours wherever the eyes of the soul may take them. An earlier recording of this piece by Eberhard Blum and company on the Hat Art label was stilted and academic; it came off as if the composer himself was attempting some gargantuan exercise, which didn't ring true when placed against the body of Feldman's work. Feldman has created an "abstraction of exactitude" in this homage to his friend, which is exactly the manner in which Guston the artist extracted everything from himself. Silence plays its usual pivotal role here, not as ether to emerge from, but as the platform to which all notes are held in the end.
Morton Feldman (January 12, 1926 – September 3, 1987) was an American composer. A major figure in 20th-century music, Feldman was a pioneer of indeterminate music, a development associated with the experimental New York School of composers also including John Cage, Christian Wolff, and Earle Brown

In his later years, American composer Morton Feldman wrote long compositions. Really, really long compositions. Piano and String Quartet and For Bunita Marcus each fill an eighty minute CD; For Christian Wolff runs around three hours; For Philip Guston clocks in at over four. Though it's his longest, String Quartet II is one of Feldman's most dynamic and aggressive works. The strings jump between themes, play occasional flurries of notes, and produce a more grinding and aggressive sound than on, say, the serene and austere Piano and String Quartet. In the first 2xBD hours the music ranges from barely audible to enraged. A set of themes is reworked and revisited; they're so short that they seem more like gestures, until you've heard them so many times that they become melodies . That's unfortunate: Feldman is essential listening.
Though the last 10 years has seen a steady flow of new recordings of Morton Feldman’s music, those have tended to concentrate on the remarkable series of works from the final decade of the composer’s life. But how his music achieved the refinement and clarity of those often greatly extended late pieces has been less thoroughly explored
