Six Metamorphoses after Ovid Op. 49) is a piece of program music for solo oboe written by Britten in 1951. Each of the titular six metamorphoses is based on a character from Roman mythology and includes an inscription summarizing their story: Pan, who played upon the reed pipe which was Syrinx, his beloved. Phaeton, who rode upon the chariot of the sun for one day and was hurled into the river Padus by a thunderbolt. The four-part fourth metamorphosis reflects the atmosphere of a drunken feast or festival. The fifth, marked lento piacevole, is meant to convey the act of staring at a reflection in a pool. The work concludes with a "pleasant and meandering" representation of beauty and flow.

Benjamin Britten: Six Metamorphoses after Ovid, Op. 49, for oboe solo. Lon- don : Boosey & Hawkes, 1952. Benjamin Britten, in his Six Metamor- phoses after Ovid has set himself a heroic task in miniature: that of using a single oboe as the medium for portraying six divergent moods. He has written skill- fully and lovingly for the instrument. The lowest three notes of the oboe, which may be raucous even for the most careful player, are used only in forte; he writes higher than three-lined D only in the "Bacchus" which intends to be comic; and most important of all, he gives the player time to breathe.
