Showpieces for Violin & Piano. What a tone! David Oistrakh was a virtuoso, of that there is no doubt. What makes his playing stand apart, though, is his rich, full, round tone. Oistrakh does not draw attention to his technical skill, he draws attention to the music. These duets, with Vladimir Yampolsky on piano, were recorded at Abbey Road in London in early 1956, and first released by EMI in 1957. It's a fine set of "showpieces," beginning with Tartini's sonata in G minor, "The Devil's Trill. This is an easy recommendation for anyone who loves great violin music, another truly "Great Recording of the Century" from the EMI vaults. 16 people found this helpful.

While all of our talk so far has been about the 19th century violin concerto, we have not forgotten about the many works for solo violin, violin/piano, and violin duo! In addition to providing an extensive collection of 19th century violin concerti, this series will bring to light generally unknown works for solo violin. As a continuation of the huge success of the violin concertos, our Henri Vieuxtemps specialist Misha Keylin will be tackling the composer’s complete works, starting with an album of showpieces followed closely by an album of opera fantasies, both for violin and piano. Vieuxtemps, a pupil of de Beriot, was close to being both a first rank virtuoso and a first rank composer, and he managed to combine these two talents to create some of the most beautiful and difficult music ever composed.
