Jacobus Henricus "Henry" van 't Hoff, Jr. (Dutch: ; 30 August 1852 – 1 March 1911) was a Dutch physical chemist. A highly influential theoretical chemist of his time, van 't Hoff was the first winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. His pioneering work helped found the modern theory of chemical affinity, chemical equilibrium, chemical kinetics, and chemical thermodynamics

The van 't Hoff equation relates the change in the equilibrium constant, Keq, of a chemical reaction to the change in temperature, T, given the standard enthalpy change, ΔH⊖, for the process. It was proposed by Dutch chemist Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff in 1884 in his book Études de dynamique chimique (Studies in Dynamic Chemistry). This equation is sometimes also referred to as the Vukančić–Vuković equation.

Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff In September 1873 Henry van 't Hoff enrolled at Utrecht University: he graduated in December of that same year and just one year later he was awarded his PhD. Just before his dissertation Van 't Hoff published a paper that would bring him fame, consisting of just twelve pages: it was titled 'A proposal for extending the structural formulas currently used in spatial chemistry'. The paper laid the foundation for spatial chemistry, . stereochemistry, and discovered the asymmetrical carbon atom.

Van 't Hoff's work in these subjects helped found the discipline of physical chemistry as it is today. The third of seven children, Van 't Hoff was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His father was Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff, S. a physician, and his mother was Alida Kolff van 't Hoff. From a young age, he was interested in science and nature, and frequently took part in botanical excursions. Against the wishes of his father, Van 't Hoff chose to study chemistry. First, he enrolled at Delft University of Technology in September 1869, and studied until 1871, when he passed his final exam on at 8 July and obtained a degree of chemical technologist. He passed all his courses in two years, although the time assigned to study was three years.

This article is about the Dutch architect and designer. For the American tennis player, see Robert Van't Hof. Robert van 't Hoff. 1887-11-05)November 5, 1887 Rotterdam, Netherlands. Although he was born to a comfortable middle-class background, married a wealthy heiress, and for a while was able to subsidise the publication of the De Stijl journal, van 't Hoff was a member of the Communist Party of the Netherlands in the years following World War I. Following the failure of Pieter Jelles Troelstra's call for a socialist revolution.

van ‘t Hoff has acquired fame particularly by his epoch-making publications. His doctor’s thesis (1874) was entitled Bijdrage tot de Kennis van Cyaanazijnzuren en Malonzuur (Contribution to the knowledge of cyanoacetic acids and malonic acid). Thus, lowering the temperature results in heat development while increasing the temperature results in heat absorption. This principle of mobile equilibrium was subsequently (1885) put in a general form by Le Chatelier, who extended the principle to include compensation, by change of volume, for imposed pressure changes – it is now known as the van ‘t Hoff-Le Chatelier principle.
