His complete set of Sibelius symphonies with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, also on the BIS label, has garnered widespread acclaim. He has recorded extensively with the Lahti orchestra for the BIS label, including music by Kalevi Aho, Einojuhani Rautavaara, Bernhard Crusell, Uuno Klami, Tauno Marttinen, Robert Kajanus, Sofia Gubaidulina, Joonas Kokkonen, Jan Sandström, Jean Sibelius, and Fredrik Pacius. Vänskä was chief conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra from 1993 to 1996.
This article aims to include information on the conductors and orchestras that have recorded the seven symphonies of the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957). A complete cycle includes the following compositions: Op. 39: Symphony No. 1 in E minor (1899, r. 1900). Op. 43: Symphony No. 2 in D major (1902). 52: Symphony No. 3 in C major (1907). 63: Symphony No. 4 in A minor (1911). 82: Symphony No. 5 in E-flat major (1915, r. 1916 and 1919). 104: Symphony No. 6 in D minor (1923).
Sibelius: The Complete Symphonies. Bis is back with yet another Sibelius release, this time in SACD format. They've reached into their vaults to bring forth two Lahti Symphony Orchestra performances from the vaunted Osmo Vänskä years (1988-2008) of which about 30 minutes has not previously seen the light of day. The centerpiece of the album is the Four Legends from the Kalevala, also known as the Lemminkäinen Suite. First composed in 1895-6, this proto-symphony stands alongside Karelia and En Saga as one of the composer's earliest "canonical" works

Birmingham and BBC Glasgow broke that mould with Oramo Sakari and Osmo Vänskä - there are others with that rare trouvaille of integrity, freshness and tension - I think of John Maclaughlin Williams (so far heard only onNaxos) and of Jose Serebrier. This Lahti Sibelius cycle is healthy and extremely well recorded. The sense of front to back perspective and of quiet details in the foreground registering despite fff activity above is remarkable and a tribute to Ingo Petry, Robert Suff, Jeffrey Ginn and Jens Braun.
