Murder in the Cathedral is a verse drama by . Eliot, first performed in 1935, that portrays the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral during the reign of Henry II in 1170. Eliot drew heavily on the writing of Edward Grim, a clerk who was an eyewitness to the event. The play, dealing with an individual's opposition to authority, was written at the time of rising fascism in Central Europe.

Eliot here really shows his poetic verve and has some lines that make you ponder their meaning. It's a beautiful verse play, similar to Shakespeare but much shorter (and without humor). And different from other adaptations of the Becket story, the Four Knights who kill the archbishop are given an opportunity to defend themselves.

Murder in the Cathedral (1962 film). Murder in the Cathedral is a 1962 Australian TV play adapted from T. Eliot's Murder in the Cathedral, about Thomas Becket. William Sterling said he wanted to adapt it for TV for a long time. than anyone had a right to expect. Murder in the Cathedral at IMDB.

The play begins with the thoughts of the Chorus, a group of common women of Canterbury. They say that Archbishop Thomas Becket has been away from his Canterbury congregation (of which they’re members) for seven years. Becket has been away because of religious and political conflicts he came to have with King Henry II. While they miss his presence, the Chorus does not wish for Becket to come back, as they fear his return would stir up old conflicts which might get him killed.
