The Brian Jonestown Massacre is an American musical project and band led by Anton Newcombe. It was formed in San Francisco in 1990. The group was the subject of the 2004 documentary film Dig!, and have gained media notoriety for their tumultuous working relationships as well as the erratic behavior of Newcombe. The collective has released eighteen albums, five compilation albums, five live albums, thirteen EPs, sixteen singles as well as two various-artist compilation albums to date.

This is recounted in the film "Dig!" although members of both bands are reported to have had issues with the film not portraying them accurately or fairly. Both bands were up-and-coming in the mid-90s and forged a connection playing a style of stoned-out shoegaze rock. Whether they were close friends I think is debatable considering the Dandys were based in Portland and BJM in . Nevertheless, there was a connection between the bands and their respective frontmen. They jammed together, crashed at each other's places, typical stuff that young bands do. The film "Dig!" plays up this relationship as its emotional hook.
