is the seventh album Thelonious Monk released for Columbia Records, featuring several original compositions as well as jazz standards. The track "Pannonica" is a tribute to the jazz patron Nica de Koenigswarter. The track "Teo" is a tribute to the albums' producer Teo Macero. The album cover is a photo of Monk taken by W. Eugene Smith in 1959. Between 1957 and 1965, Monk and other prominent New York jazz musicians rehearsed at the photographer's home, nicknamed 'The Jazz Loft'.

Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane is a 1961 album by Thelonious Monk issued on Jazzland Records, a subsidiary of Riverside Records. It consists of material recorded four years earlier when Monk worked extensively with John Coltrane, issued after Coltrane had become a leader and jazz star in his own right.

Hardcore jazzheads with no doubt be delighted with this double-disc set that includes all the recordings Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane did together in 1957 for Riverside. Never mind that the vast majority of this material has been issued several times. There are two cuts that have never appeared before: an alternate of "Crepuscule with Nellie" from the septet sessions for Monk's Music on June 25 and 26 ( with Gigi Gryce, Coleman Hawkins, bassist Wilbur Ware, and drummer Shadow Wilson), and an alternate of "Abide with Me" with just Trane, Hawkins, and Gryce.

The short-lived Thelonious Monk-John Coltrane quartet had been playing regularly for several months prior to this concert so the level of understanding between them was high. The 9 tracks come from the early and late show with Monk sounding happy to be playing the Carnegie concert grand piano and Coltrane in inspired form on tenor. Ahmed Abdul-Malik(bass) & Shadow Wilson(drums) are supportive throughout. Enjoying modern jazz,I am only just getting into Thelonious Monk, but as you might say it's never too late to enjoy the pleasures of life, regards Keith. The Coltrane name will make it a natural starting point for many newbies who want to investigate the genius of Thelonious Monk but I think you're better served by the Five Spot and IT Club recordings.

There is a sense that both Monk and Coltrane knew they were going to make history in 1957 at Carnegie Hall, and it's palpable from the opening notes of "Monk's Mood. Monk sounds grandly baroque in summoning grandly cascading arpeggios from his piano (which sounds infinitely better than the junk pianos he was often saddled with), while Coltrane sounds immensely assured. To really savor Coltrane's performances, begin by listening to the studio session with Monk currently listed in the Fantasy catalog (Thelonious Monk With John Coltrane).
