U2 - The Unforgettable Fire (1984).

Track 4 from the "U2 - The Unforgettable Fire" album released in 1984 by Island Records.

The Unforgettable Fire is the fourth studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and released on 1 October 1984 by Island Records. The band wanted to pursue a new musical direction following the harder-hitting rock of their previous album, War (1983). As a result, they employed Eno and Lanois to produce and assist in their experimentation with a more ambient and abstract sound. The resulting change in direction was at the time the band's most dramatic.

The Unforgettable Fire was U2's first studio collaboration with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. There were several significant re-issues including one in October 1996 as part of the Island Master series and one as part of the MFSL Ultradisc series in both the 12" vinyl and 5" CD formats with a slightly longer version of 4th Of July. Other unusual releases from around the world included a Mexican release on the Bertelsmann label as part of the Rockollector series. The album was certified multi-platinum by the RIAA with 3 million units sold. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, The Unforgettable Fire reached N. 4 on the album charts and stayed in the charts a total of 3 weeks. It was also selected as Best Album at Ireland's Music Industry Awards and in the Hot Press Reader's Poll, it was voted the No. 1 album by readers. It was released on 1 October 1984. The band wanted a different musical direction following the harder-hitting rock of their 1983 album War. They employed Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois to produce and assist in experimenting with a more ambient and abstract sound. Recording began in May 1984 at Slane Castle, where the band lived, wrote, and recorded to find new inspiration. The album was completed in August 1984 at Windmill Lane Studios. 9 The Unforgettable Fire Collection. 1. Bonus CD. Bonus DVD. 11 Charts and certifications.

Ultimately, The Unforgettable Fire would play out as a transitional record for this band, and over time would become regarded as the album that had to come before the success the band would enjoy with their next album, the instant classic "The Joshua Tree". It would also serve as a measuring stick of just how far this band could go and give them something to build back on for the future.

Notes

For U2, the period from May 1984 to May 1985 was an extraordinary one.

In that time they recorded and released The Unforgettable Fire and undertook a world tour that took them onto a new plane as perhaps the world's top act. In Bono's own phrase, having climbed to the top of one mountain, they went to find another. Here in songs and images is the story of that singular ascent.

In this unique compilation you'll see and hear what it is that has made The Unforgettable Fire unforgettable, from the extraordinary visual images of Pride (In the Name of Love) and the Unforgettable Fire single to the documentary style of A Sort of homecoming and Bad - here released in video form for the first time. Here too, you'll see the special half-hour documentary of the actual making of the album, shot on location at Slane Castle and Windmill Lane Studios. The Unforgettable Fire, tour and album is a memorable chapter in the U2 story. The images on this video package chronicle it faithfully.
