Japanese-born artist Mitski Miyawaki’s fourth album is arguably her best: an indie rock ode to depression, anxiety, happiness, and everything in between, Puberty 2 is as terrifying as it is complex. Most memorably, she pulls out all the stops about cultural identity and multinational angst in lead single Your Best American Girl, which, driven by distortion and guitars, is simultaneously tragic and motivating. Puberty 2 astounds with its own personal strength, its layered complexity
Puberty 2 is grounded in Mitski’s distorted guitar, and at times feels like it’s in direct conversation with the very notion of the indie rock canon. This makes the album sound simultaneously familiar and challenging, never more so than on lead single Your Best American Girl, where she taps directly into what made people love early Weezer and other ’90s bands favoring a catchy/fuzzy dichotomy.
The opener "Happy" is full of bite and irony as she describes a hook-up and his stealthy exit in a context of grooving rhythms, a catchy melody, and poppy saxophone solos. Through it all in the background - though it's brought to the fore in the intro and outro - is the relentless pounding of a drum

Be the Cowboy is the fifth studio album by Japanese-American indie rock musician Mitski, released on August 17, 2018, through Dead Oceans. Upon its release, Be the Cowboy received widespread acclaim from music critics, who later ranked it among the best albums of 2018
I am a forest fire, Mitski Miyawaki sings on A Burning Hill, the last song on her new album, Puberty 2. I am the fire and I am the forest and I am the witness watching i. .I can’t imagine a better way to describe what Mitski does. Her great subjects are all interior: Sadness, fear, depression, the ever-elusive nature of happiness and inner peace. The way she sings it, she is at once the destroyer and the one being destroyed. And she’s also the distant figure watching it, describing what she sees. You won’t find many primal howls of pain on a Mitski album
With this in mind, Mitski's Puberty 2 defies all expectation or logic by being something daring, unique, and, above all, essential. Part of this uniqueness is Mitski herself. Her voice holds an amazingly versatile cadence, one that shifts effortlessly between hard-nosed pop rocker and vulnerable girl-group member. She's credible both in snarl and swoon, and this gives her songs a baseline emotional core. But this variety may be the album's biggest weakness. Despite the eclectic set of songs, the album never quite sells a complete narrative idea. The title itself sells the idea of a more explicit narrative slant, and the album never delivers. It doesn't help that the album's criminally short-clocking in at a little over 30 minutes-and this brevity makes it feel more like a highlights playlist cut from a longer, more complete album.
