The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams is a 2011 album by folk, country, and rock artists who set music to lyrics by country musician Hank Williams. The album was released on October 4, 2011. Williams died suddenly in 1953 at the age of 29 while traveling to his next scheduled concert on New Years Day in Canton, Ohio. Inside his Cadillac, the police found the unfinished handwritten lyrics to songs that Williams had never recorded.

Bob Dylan assembled various singers to put unrecorded lyrics by Hank Williams to music. The result is The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. Artists who participated in the album, which has been in the works for almost a decade, expressed their sense of honor at being asked to complete the work of such a monumental musician. There’s a lot of magic still left in these songs, said Alan Jackson, who opens the album with You’ve Been Lonesome, Too.
Using Hank Williams’ lyrics notebooks to imagine songs he never finished, The Lost Notebooks turns a vaguely necrophiliac idea into a startling reincarnation. Bob Dylan‘s mariachi waltz, The Love That Faded, is a sweet-croaked séance; Lucinda Williams and Jack White, in different ways, show how much room Hank’s writing gives singers to emote.
