Album · 2011 · 12 Songs. Few albums have as strange a story behind them or such fantastic results. The songs here were created using lyrics that country legend Hank Williams had written in his notebooks but never got around to putting to music. Williams’ death at age 29 on New Year’s Day, 1953, froze his legacy with a catalog of unrivaled brilliance. Now, with the help of a first-rate cast, his unfinished songs are given life. Levon Helm, drummer from The Band, pulls from his Arkansas childhood for You’ll Never Again Be Mine.

The Lost Notebooks is being released on Oct. 4 on Mr. Dylan’s imprint, Egyptian Records, in conjunction with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Columbia Records. Bob Dylan assembled various singers to put unrecorded lyrics by Hank Williams to music. The result is The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. Artists who participated in the album, which has been in the works for almost a decade, expressed their sense of honor at being asked to complete the work of such a monumental musician. There’s a lot of magic still left in these songs, said Alan Jackson, who opens the album with You’ve Been Lonesome, Too.

Using Hank Williams’ lyrics notebooks to imagine songs he never finished, The Lost Notebooks turns a vaguely necrophiliac idea into a startling reincarnation. Bob Dylan‘s mariachi waltz, The Love That Faded, is a sweet-croaked séance; Lucinda Williams and Jack White, in different ways, show how much room Hank’s writing gives singers to emote. The ghostliest moment is Alan Jackson’s You’ve Been Lonesome, Too. Stoic and emotionally devastated, Jackson reconnects Williams with the country tradition he fathered. The release of this album continues the Williams’ legend by marking the first time these lyrics have been put in public, but meanwhile the roster of artists on the track listing is not only impressive, it’s mesmerizing. Let’s put it this way: if you walked into a restaurant and saw these 13 musicians sitting around a table drinking whiskey and chewing hunks of steak, well, we’d never be allowed in that restaurant anyway, so let’s just stop dreaming.
