The Precise Music of Galina Ustvolskaya: 6 Piano Sonatas.
The six piano sonatas by Galina Ustvolskaya were composed over the course of 43 years – each showing a gradual progression of the composer's style. The first two sonatas were written during her study with Shostakovich, but retain a unique voice. According to Alex Ross, the works are evocative of the Rosicrucian mystical period of Satie. The following two were composed less than a decade later and involve more expressive dynamic markings and contrasts.
In the period from 1947–1988 Galina Ustvolskaya wrote six piano sonatas. These Sonatas are the laboratory of her spiritual quest: In them there is the combination of the creation of the universe and maximum personal deepening and confessing. Her work recalls discoveries in physics, showing that the macrocosm and microcosm are built to the same laws. The Sixth Sonata is the last and the shortest. In it, Ustvolskaya introduces new techniques to her music, involving playing the piano using the palms of the hands and the elbows. Alexei Lubimov had the idea for a performance of all of Ustvolskaya's piano sonatas during a single concert while he was studying her music with his students: A Moscow theatre, the School of Dramatic Art, gave us the use of its unusual ‘Globe Hall’ for this project. The hall is shaped like an octohedron, with three tiers of seating around a central empty space.

Tom Service: The Russian composer's brutally uncompromising work has an elementality that's both horrifying and thrilling. It has the narrowness of a laser beam which is capable of piercing metal ; it’s a voice from the ‘Black Hole’ of Leningrad, the epicentre of communist terror, the city that suffered so terribly the horrors of war ; it burn. ith an inhuman intensity and a spiritual strength, as though it his broken away from musical substance and exists independently, like radiation.
This DVD, however, serves up a stimulating alternative-the six sonatas performed by six different pianists, recorded live at Moscow's School of Dramatic Arts in 2011, with Alexandre Brage's intimate camerawork reminding you of both the brute physicality and the very specific technique required to play Ustvolskaya's music. This Ustvolskaya marathon was organised by the Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov. Five of his students-Olga Pashchenko, Ksenia Semenova, Alexei Grotz, Elizaveta Miller and Vladimir Ivanov-performed the first five sonatas, then Lubimov himself took to the stage.

It is hard to apply the usual musicological jargon to Ustvolskaya‘s music. She was not the apocalypse of the 20th century; she was its echo. Thanks to providence, she was never sent to one of Stalin’s concentration camps: destiny allowed her to live in seclusion as an artist never blinded by hopes of success. Ustvolskaya chose to live the life of a hermit. Contact with other human beings was something she often found difficult – even with musicians who really liked her. As she put it herself: My sincerest wish would be to crawl into a barrel like Diogenes and just live secluded therein.
