Taking Out Time collection contains not only the seven tracks included on the United Artists release, but six alternative versions included as bonus tracks. Sawyer’s guitar is the highlight of these recordings, especially on tunes like Every Little Thing featuring an understated, melodic solo and Possession which features Hardin’s organ as well as another tasty solo by Sawyer. This incarnation of the band recorded an album in 1969 which would eventually find US-only release in 1970 under the title Funky. At long last The Spencer Davis Group Mk. II recordings get proper reissue thanks to the fine folks at Cherry Red Records, UK and their wonderful RPM Records imprint.

The second half of Disc One comprises their 1968 single and album recorded with Sawyer’s replacement Ray Fenwick, who brought with him the excellent ‘After Tea’ (co-written with Dutch Tee Set pop master Hans Van Eijck). Album With Their New Face On is a mix of jazzy R&B and pop psychedelia. The standout R&B track is ‘Don’t Want You No More’, which was later covered by The Allman Brothers. Disc Two boasts their rare, Germany-only single, and the US only LP Funky recorded in 1969 by Fenwick and Davis plus Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray (just before they joined Elton John).

By 1969’s Funky and its title-defying awkward compound of country and psychedelia, Davis was the only founder member left, aided by a rhythm section who would soon leave to join Elton John. Singles, B-sides, radio sessions and soundtrack contributions round out the package, the most celebrated being the joyful theme song to kids’ TV magazine show Magpie, released under the name The Murgatroyd Band. Classic Rock Newsletter.

The Second Album is the second album by the British band the Spencer Davis Group, released in 1966. Many of the songs were a slightly experimental blend of beat, folk, jazz and blues, but included Jackie Edwards' "Keep on Running", which gave the group their first . number 1 single, and the R&B standard "Georgia on My Mind". The album spent eighteen weeks on the .

With the loss of Stevie Winwood, the Spencer Davis Group were just another rock band. But that didn't keep them from marching onwards until the end of the decade, with a few more personnel changes.

Excellent collection. Being a fan of "With their new face on" album have never heard these tracks sounding so good. All these extra tracks add a wonderful touch. "Funky" was never pleasing to me, but in this boxed set is a minor minus (for me anyway).
