Actor Alfred Molina has spoken about the heartache of watching his actress wife Jill Gascoine suffer in the final stages of Alzheimer's. The Chocolat star said his wife's prognosis was 'bleak' and described the disease as 'cowardly'. Miss Gascoine, 79, who rose to fame as Detective Inspector Maggie Forbes in The Gentle Touch, has been battling with Alzheimer's for at least four years. Alzheimer's is a cowardly disease.

Jill Gascoine (born 11 April 1937) is a British actress and novelist. She is best known for her role as Detective Inspector Maggie Forbes in the 1980s television series The Gentle Touch and its spin-off series . In the 1990s, she also became a novelist and has published three books. Gascoine began her acting career in theatre in the 1960s and had regular roles at the Dundee Repertory Theatre. She was also an actress in the Downfield Musical Society in Dundee.
