The Antlers’ third full-length album, Hospice, marked the beginning of the project's shift from Silberman's solo project into its full-band incarnation, featuring significant contributions from Lerner and Cicci, as well as guest vocals by Sharon Van Etten. The band self-released the album in March 2009, selling out all of the quantities in stock. In 2011 The Antlers released their fourth studio album Burst Apart on May 10 through Frenchkiss Records in the United States and on May 9 through Transgressive Records in the UK, Europe and Japan. The record received praise from well-regarded publications such as New York Times, The Guardian, Under The Radar, and Pitchfork who gave it the endorsement of their ‘Best New Music’ category.

For Burst Apart, Silberman puts his personal tragedy behind him and starts anew by burying himself in electronics to make a unique sort of wistful chamber pop for the digital age. Michael Lerner and t Darby Cicci return to flesh out the songs, but Boards of Canada and Air are more of a guiding force this time than the fuzz-folkish Neutral Milk Hotel influence heard on Hospice.

The Antlers : Burst Apart. So Burst Apart is more collaborative and, naturally, less subjective than Hospice was. Silberman still stretches his vocals impossibly thin under big blocks of sound, but dare I say there’s actual warmth to be found, like a t-shirt on a radiator? I still don’t know if Silberman can actually sing, but let’s face it: not sounding like an emotional cripple all the time is not negative.

If anything, Burst Apart is Hospice wrapped in everyday events, a tragedy where nothing fantastic is really going to happen. Peter is still as masochistic as ever. But I like you inside, so you can push me right now. And Sylvia is still the abusive girlfriend she has always been ( Every time we speak you are spitting in my mouth ). The large variety of melodies and sonic variations in the album is a refreshing step for the group. A development that allows the band to explore many different subtexts of emotions in this album, which, while not making it an emotional jackhammer like it’s predecessor, does manage to paint a vibrant and more colorful landscape.
