Randolph Edward "Randy" Weston (April 6, 1926 – September 1, 2018) was an American jazz pianist and composer whose creativity was inspired by his ancestral African connection. Weston's piano style owed much to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, whom he cited in a 2018 video as among pianists he counted as influences, as well as Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Earl Hines. Beginning in the 1950s, Weston worked often with trombonist and arranger Melba Liston.

Randy (subtitled Băp!! Beep Boo-Bee Băp Beep-M-Boo Bee Băp!) is an album by American jazz pianist Randy Weston recorded in 1964 and originally released on Bakton, Weston's own label. The album was later reissued in 1972 on the Atlantic label under the title African Cookbook

When African Cookbook was recorded in 1964, pianist Randy Weston had no luck interesting any label to release the music, so he came out with it independently on his tiny Bakton company. In 1972, Atlantic released the performances.

Cookbook is an early album by Weston from 1964. It was retitled some time in the 70s -which is confusing because there's another Weston album out that is also entitled African Cookbook. The basic format is piano-horns quintet -Weston with trumpeter Ray Copeland and tenor sax player Booker Ervin plus bass and drums on the first four cuts, the same group with two African drummers added on cuts 5-7. It's vintage Weston -starts with a jazz waltz, a patented specialty of Weston's (think "Little Niles"), continues with a plaintive ballad that showcases Ervin, and so on.

Randy Weston - piano Booker Ervin - tenor sax Ray Copeland - trumpet & flugelhorn Vishnu Wood - bass Lenny McBrowne - drums Big Black - conga drums Sir Harold Murray - percussion. Randy Weston plays celeste on Congolese Children. The vocal on Comgolese Children is by Big Black. When African Cookbook was recorded in 1964, pianist Randy Weston had no luck interesting any label to release the music, so he came out with it independently on his tiny Bakton company. It should be in any Jazz fan’s collection. It was originally released as an LP album under another name, Randy. Randy Weston had to produce it on his own independent label named Bakton basically because there was no interest. It was released later in 1972 and with the title African Cookbook.
