The most romantic album to come out of the Moody Blues' orbit, and the biggest success of their five-year hiatus

Blue Jays is a 1975 album by Justin Hayward and John Lodge. It was recorded and released during the Moody Blues' five-year hiatus. During work on the Moody Blues album that was to follow Seventh Sojourn, bandmates Lodge, Mike Pinder, Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge summoned Hayward and producer Tony Clarke out of a recording session to call off the project. The tension-fraught recording of Seventh Sojourn and subsequent world tour had left the band exhausted and relationships frayed

In fact, those who find Hayward's guitar sound to be among the best in the business will find "Blue jays" to be something of a holy grail.
Justin's Blue Guitar, was released on a 45 (UK: TH 26 September 1975:US:6702) strange huh? It breached the Britiannia best seller on Oct 25 and shot to 8 for 7 wks. Thus, that's why it ended up on Blue Jays. Justin Hayward (the real creative lynch pin of the band) and John Lodge decided to go ahead and make an album to make sure those songs got to the fans. Unfortunately the album was overlooked by the public in general and the band eventually re-formed and still tours- I saw them at Bethel Wood (site of the original Woodstock) in 2011.
Hayward has the more distinctive body of songs, but their strength as a unit lies in their vocal pairing, which is as strong here as it ever was with the group. The pair play the guitars and basses, backed by a group that includes members of the Threshold-signed band Providence. Hayward wrote or co-wrote seven of the original album's ten songs, and most of it is fairly impressive as soft romantic rock, although "Nights Winters Years" is a little bit too melodramatic. The bonus track, "Blue Guitar," is an added attraction to the CD. Track Listing.

The bonus track, "Blue Guitar," a follow-up single to the album that started life as a Hayward solo track recorded with his longtime friends the members of 10cc – with Lodge and Clarke adding their contribution for this release – is an added attraction to the CD. Blue Jays was reissued in the late spring of 2004 under the Decca Records imprint – initially, at least, only in England – with significantly upgraded sound and extremely thorough new annotation.
