Vestal Goodman (December 13, 1929 – December 27, 2003) was a singer who performed in the Southern gospel genre for more than half a century. She is known both as a solo performer and as a member of the Happy Goodman Family-which originated with her husband and his brothers and sisters-one of the pioneering groups in southern gospel music. Goodman was the fourth of six children, and she began singing in church as a child

Redirected from The Happy Goodmans). The Happy Goodman Family, is a Southern gospel group that was founded in the 1940s by Howard "Happy" Goodman and performed together for several decades. The Happy Goodmans achieved significant popularity in the 1960s. In 1968, they won the first Grammy Award to be awarded for a gospel album by a gospel group. The Happy Goodman Family began to be known for their singing around 1950.

This award-winning gospel group enjoyed popularity from the early '60s.

Goodman, who turned 74 on Dec. 17, had been vacationing with family for the Christmas holidays when she developed a case of the flu. Born Vestal Freeman, she grew up in Alabama, dreaming of a career as an opera singer. They were also original members of syndicated television show "The Gospel Singing Jubilee. They were inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1998. Goodman was the recipient of the Gospel Music Association's first Dove Award for female vocalist of the year in 1969. In addition to her work with the Happy Goodman Family, Vestal enjoyed a successful solo career. She was acclaimed not only by her peers in the gospel community, but loved and respected in contemporary Christian and country music circles as well. In 1999, the first of two special "Vestal & Friends" projects was released.

Two of the "Original" Happy Goodmans have passed away, but Howard, Vestal, and their friend Johnny Minick have the closest sound to the original group as possible. Surrounded by friends, the Goodmans take the stage and sing with a passion and power that defies generations.
