Pedro Vargas Mata (29 April 1906, in San Miguel Allende – 30 October 1989, in Mexico City) was a Mexican singer and actor, from the golden age of Mexican cinema. He was known as the "Nightingale of the Americas". Born into a family of modest means, Pedro Vargas sang in the church choir in his hometown from the age of seven. In 1920 he came to Mexico City and immediately began singing in the choirs of several churches and giving serenades

Pedro Vargas (April 29, 1904 - October 30, 1989) was one of the most famous singers of 20th-century in Mexico. A native of San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Vargas was a classically-trained tenor who originally sang opera but gained fame with his renditions of popular songs. In 1942, Vargas performed at the White House for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, one of many honors he received during his long career.
