Les Misérables is a sung-through musical based on the novel Les Misérables by French poet and novelist Victor Hugo. The London production has run continuously since October 1985 – the longest-running musical in the West End and the second longest-running musical in the world.

Les Misérables, colloquially known in English-speaking countries as Les Mis (/leɪ ˈmɪz/), is a sung-through musical adapted from French poet and novelist Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name by Claude-Michel Schönberg (music), Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel (original French lyrics), and Herbert Kretzmer (English lyrics). The original French musical premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein

As a follow-up to their first collaboration, La Revolution Française (1973), composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel moved a few years later in French history - and into classic fiction - for their musical adaptation of Victor Hugo 's celebrated novel Les Misérables. Like Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita (as well as La Revolution Française ), the work first took the form of a "concept" album - . a studio cast recording - before the authors sought a theatrical production.
