Szell's recordings with Cleveland in particular have remained steadily in print. In the 1990s the Columbia catalogue was acquired by Sony Classics, which continues to issue the recordings. The Cleveland Orchestra was one of the first to find new audiences via digital recording technology thanks to its collaboration with the locally-based audiophile label Telarc. This association, as well as one with Decca, began under Maazel and continued under his successor Christoph von Dohnányi. Pictures at an Exhibition (orch. Ravel), Night on the Bare Mountain. The Firebird is a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. It was written for the 1910 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes company; the original choreography was by Michel Fokine, with a scenario by Alexandre Benois and Fokine based on the Russian fairy tales of the Firebird and the blessing and curse it possesses for its owner. When first performed at the Opéra de Paris on 25 June 1910, the work was an instant success with both audience and critics.
Pictures at An Exhibition - the Catacombs (Sepulchrum Romanum). 17. Pictures at An Exhibition - Cum Mortuis in Lingua Mortua. Abbado recorded it earlier in 1981 with the London Symphony, and his interpretation had changed little when this recording was made. I settled on this version - conducted by Abbado - after comparing Abbado and Karajan's versions of the finale to Wagner's Parsifal: Karajan's sound is slick with a solid tempo, but lacks the emotional power and power of Abbado's. groundwork for Igor Stravinsky in the first fifteen years of the 20th century ("The Firebird", and, especially, "The Rite Of Spring" may owe quite a lot to this work).
