Rachmaninoff's second set of Etudes-Tableaux is, if anything, even fuller, more finely textured, and darker than the first

33) Etudes-Tableux, O. 9 9. No. 1: Allegro Agitato (C Minor) (Etudes-Tableaux, Op. 39) 1. In both sets, the Op. 33 and 39, Rachmaninov seems influenced by Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" while also employing his own idiomatic style of extraordinary lyricism and colossal virtuosity. Unlike Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov does not inform the listener as to the pictorial inspiration for each piece, but he did divulge to Respighi some possible programmes: the sea and seagulls, Little Red Riding Hood, scenes at a Fair, and a funeral march, to name a few. On the whole, Vladimir Ovchinnikov demonstrates a satisfying consistency in his executions of these Etudes
While there is no knowing what whimsy prompted the fine fellows from the reissue department of EMI to release Vladimir Ovchinnikov's 1989 recording of both sets of Rachmaninov's Etudes-Tableaux in its "encore" series, one can only be grateful it did. Along with rereleasing both Richter's sublime Schumann disc and Barenboim's abysmal Beethoven disc, EMI has released for the first time this vivid and virtuosic Rachmaninov recording by Ovchinnikov. While recordings of all the Etudes-Tableaux are rare, recordings of all of them that are any good are even rarer.
The Études-Tableaux ("study pictures"), Op. 33, is the first of two sets of piano études composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. They were intended to be "picture pieces", essentially "musical evocations of external visual stimuli". But Rachmaninoff did not disclose what inspired each one, stating: "I do not believe in the artist that discloses too much of his images.
