Obscure No. 9: Irma - An Opera by Tom Phillips (1978).
Tom Phillips (3) & AMM – Irma. Label: Matchless Recordings – MR 16, Matchless Recordings – MR16. Libretto By – Tom Phillips (3). Percussion – Eddie Prévost. Piano, Electronics – John Tilbury. Voice – Birte Pederson, Tom Phillips (3). Voice – Phil Minton. Voice – Elise Lorraine. Voice, Soprano Saxophone – Lol Coxhill.
High degrees of sound abstraction and noise are tied into a programmatic structure - an unusual place to hear the typically dogmatic freeform music of the AMM group. The music flows in and out of focus and builds its scarce structure from Zen-like patience and willful abstraction. Of appeal to fans of avant-garde and new music operas such as those of Robert Ashley, IRMA is also essential for the AMM collector.
Matchless Recordings, 1988 AMM & Tom Phillips. Show notes on this work. A recording of IRMA arranged by Gavin Bryars appeared on Brian Eno’s Obscure label in 1978 with a collage cover by John Bonis. The 1988 recording is the one preferred by the composer, performed by the spontaneous music ensemble AMM (here comprised of Eddie Prévost, Keith Rowe and John Tilbury ) with Ian Mitchell (clarinet), Lol Coxhill (soprano saxophone & voice) and vocalists Elise Lorraine, Phil Minton, Birte Pederson and Tom Phillips.
