The groove quotient was very high on Spellbinder, maybe even higher than on later albums such as Jazz Raga or Sorcerer. This set is all Szabo, drifting, wafting, and soaring above all that rhythm; the track selection provides ample space for Szabo's highly individualized Eastern modal style to shine. The set opens with the title track, a snaky guitar masterpiece with plenty of droning strings and pinched chords that are followed by open string flourishes.

Gábor István Szabó (March 8, 1936 – February 26, 1982) was a Hungarian American guitarist whose style incorporated jazz, pop, rock, and Hungarian music. Gábor Szabó was born in Budapest, Hungary. He began playing guitar at the age of 14. When he was 20, in the aftermath of the Hungarian revolution of 1956, he moved to California and he later attended Berklee College of Music in Boston between 1958 and 1960.
Gabor Szabo 1936-1982 was one of those artists who never received much recognition for the influence his music had. Many guitarists who became disillusioned with angry rock styles & who wanted to beautify their guitar playing may well have been inspired by this master musician. A couple of years later I discovered "Spellbinder" by Gabor Szabo in a record store, took a chance & bought it. I have treasured the album ever since. Hungarian born Szabo was categorized as a jazz guitarist but his styles include Gypsy, Folk, Spanish, Latin American, & even some of the better quality Pop tunes from the sixties which he transforms into guitar delights. Gabor played a Gibson acoustic guitar with an electric pick up & most of the tracks are instrumental.
