The six String Quartets, Op. 76 by Joseph Haydn were composed in 1797 or 1798 and dedicated to the Hungarian count Joseph Georg von Erdődy (1754–1824). They form the last complete set of string quartets that Haydn composed. At the time of the commission, Haydn was employed at the court of Prince Nicolaus Esterházy II and was composing the oratorio The Creation as well as Princess Maria Hermenegild Esterházy's annual mass.
Joseph Haydn wrote sixty-eight string quartets. The number was previously thought to be eighty-three, but this includes some arrangements and spurious works.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Op. 18, published in 1801 by T. Mollo et Comp in Vienna in two books of three quartets each, consisted of his first six string quartets. They were composed between 1798 and 1800 to fulfill a commission for Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz, who was the employer of Beethoven's friend, the violinist Karl Amenda. They are thought to demonstrate his total mastery of the classical string quartet as developed by Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Haydn: String Quartets O. .has been added to your Cart. 76. Haydn's Op. 9, 50, and 77 are also substantial but less recommended before the others. But, regardless of what you pick, the Kodaly Quartet series is among the finest choices (and best value of course), receiving universally high marks from music critics like Penguin Guide or Third Ear Guide. As it turns out, every volume in the series has been a delight, including the ones that have the Opus 3 quartets that were once attributed to Haydn and are now widely believed to have been composed by Romanus Hoffstetter (1742 - 1815). The clear consensus of musicologists is that these early works are not at nearly the same level of musical inventiveness and complexity as Haydn's later quartets, the ones that are widely recognized as his greatest masterpieces of chamber music.
17 Nos. 1-6. The London Haydn Quartet. Those who want a 'period' performance should not hesitate; they are unlikely to hear any better of its kind. BBC Music Magazine, October 2009, Mor. elease Date: 1st Jun 2009. Catalogue No: CDA67722. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Haydn’s String Quartets Op 17 were written during his most effusively productive period, during his tenure in the service of the Esterházy family. He had a magnificent group of musicians at his disposal, including the young virtuoso violinist Luigi Tomasini, whose genius can be traced throughout these works, particularly in the achingly beautiful melodies of the adagio movements. These string quartets mark Haydn’s emergence as an indisputably great composer.
