The Blue Velvets (. Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets) was the first incarnation of the band that would later become known as The Golliwogs and, eventually, Creedence Clearwater Revival. The band started out, in 1959, as an instrumental trio. The original line up was John Fogerty (guitar), Stu Cook (piano), and Doug Clifford (drums). In 1960, John's older brother Tom, who had been in local bands since 1958, began singing with the group.

John Cameron Fogerty (born May 28, 1945) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. Together with Doug Clifford, Stu Cook, and his brother Tom Fogerty, he founded the band Creedence Clearwater Revival, for which he was the lead singer, lead guitarist and principal songwriter. The group had nine top-ten singles and eight gold albums between 1968 and 1972, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

The trio also backed singer Tom Fogerty (John Fogerty's older brother by three years) at live gigs and in the recording studio and they were known as Tommy Fogerty & The Blue Velvets. By 1964, the band had signed to Fantasy Records, an independent jazz label based in San Francisco at the time. For the band's first release, however, Fantasy Records co-owner Max Weiss renamed the group The Golliwogs (after the children's literary character, Golliwogg). 1. The Blue Velvets was the name of the band formed in 1959 by John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook (all born 1945) in El Cerrito, California. In 1964 they changed their name first to The Golliwogs, and then in 1967, eventually, to Creedence Clearwater Revival. John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook began playing instrumentals and "juke box standards" together under the name The Blue Velvets.
