Kyung Wha Chung, Bartók, Solti - Violin Concertos 1 & 2 FLAC album

Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung has appeared regularly as a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras . Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor is surely one of the most outstanding works ever written and one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos of all time.

Dark Desperate Harsh Intense. Kyung-Wha Chung, Georg Solti.

Kyung Wha Chung (born 26 March 1948) is a South Korean violinist. Kyung Wha Chung was born in Seoul as the middle of the seven children in her family. Her father was an exporter, and her mother ran a restaurant. She began piano studies at age 4, and violin studies at age 7, where she proved more sympathetic to the violin. She became recognized as a child prodigy, and by the age of 9 she was already playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra

Kyung Wha Chung – violin London Symphony Orchestra Georg Solti – conductor. This recording of Bartok's Violin Concerto, dating from 1976, was seminal in my catching the collector's bug. Until then I knew Bartok's Concerto through the famed 1953 recording of Menuhin-Furtwängler (Violin Concerto 2, on a cassette tape poorly transferred from the LP), and decided to try this new one (which I bought also in cassette form - I preferred tape hiss to scratching surfaces). The pairing might make the difference. The EMI recording has the two Rhapsodies, arguably more interesting than Bartok's youthful Violin Concerto from 1907 which opens this disc. Nonetheless Decca's decision to pair Chung and Solti's 1983 recording can't be disputed, in view of its program coherence.

Winner of two Gramophone Awards (the first, for her Deutsche Grammophon album of Strauss and Respighi sonatas with Krystian Zimerman; the second, for her EMI recording of Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto with Sir Simon Rattle), Chung has also received many prizes and top honours – including the Medal of Civil Merit from the South Korean government, and the Ho Am Prize. Prokofiev ‎Violin Concertos 1 & 2. London Symphony Orchestra André Previn. Released 1977 on Decca. London Philharmonic Orchestra Sir Georg Solti.

Kyung-Wha Chung plays this demanding work beautifully and is nicely supported by Simon Rattle and the City of Birmingham Orchestra. The concerto is paired with the two Rhapsodies for Violin and Orchestra that were written in 1928 for Joseph Szigeti and Zoltan Szekely. The Rhapsodies are in two movements and have a Hungarian style similar to the Hungarian works of Franz Liszt. They are approachable virtuosic works with appealing dance melodies.

Vladimir Ashkenazy (piano), Kyung Wha Chung (violin), London Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Georg Solti. the hushed intensity of the writing, as well as the biting Hungarian flavour, is caught superbly, thanks to Solti as well as to the soloist, and there is no sentimental lingering.
