Like You're Dead!, The Beyond, Where The Giants Roam muses on mortality, but where FlyLo conjured a surreal and colourful afterlife at times, Bruner goes to a more sombre place. As the album was inspired by the deaths of close friends, the fact that it arrived so unexpectedly makes it feel like a spontaneous outpouring of grief. The lyrics are heartfelt and almost uncomfortably raw. "Transform this decaying flesh," he pleads on the opening "Hard Times," his fragile vocals surrounded by a sparse arrangement of keys.
Although he's been busy, Thundercat hasn't released music under his own name since 2013's The Apocalypse. It's a beautiful, smooth track about lost love drenched in the sounds of classic funk that finds Thundercat tearing it up on bass and crooning incredibly real lyrics like "nobody move there's blood on the floor, and I can't find my heart.
Thundercat’s surprise release, a self-described ‘mini LP’, straddles an interesting place between the jazz-electro fusion and psychedelic r&b/hip-hop vibes of those two records, for a g ride. Although the record is only sixteen minutes long, it’s a pretty epic ordeal and includes contributions from Flying Lotus and Herbie Hancock(!). Not too shabby, Thundercat! But you don’t have to trust us; you can stream The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam below, via this site. The Beyond/Where the Giants Roam is Thundercat’s first solo release since 2013′s Apocalypse
Where Bruner succeeds in developing a unified sonic feeling, he underwhelms in his ability to reinforce it textually in a unique or interesting way. Why in the world would I give my heart to you/ Just to watch you throw it in the trash, Bruner sings in his sweeping falsetto on Them Changes. The chorus to Lone Wolf and Cub ( On your own/ On your own, on your own/ Where will you go/ Where you go, where you go/ What will you do/ What you do, what you do ) aims for dramatic concern, but ends up barely registering
Los Angeles bassist, producer and songwriter Thundercat will release a new mini-album, The Beyond, Where the Giants Roam, on June 22nd, teasing the project with the bumping, buoyant new track, Them Changes. Flying Lotus - whose Brainfeeder label will release the mini-LP - co-produced the track, which boasts a melange of sticky, gurgling synths over which the occasional plunking piano, sailing sax and Thundercat’s own soft vocals soar. I’m sitting here with a black hole in my chest, A heartless broken mess, he croons, finding the joyous funk even in abject misery. Thundercat is scheduled to hit the road later this year, though he has a handful of festival dates lined up, including sets at Pickathon in Oregon (August 1st and 2nd), the Low End Theory Festival in Los Angeles (August 8th) and Afropunk in Brooklyn (August 23rd).
