A fabulous album! I bought it more than 40 years ago, after reading a news article extolling the vocal range of this mixed-race, British vocalist, already being hailed as perhaps the world's greatest singer. She has a rare vocal gift that ranges from husky, lusty low tones, to high notes you wouldn't believe. Hear her up beyond the clouds on "Music" - she not only hits the notes, she enunciates the lyrics perfectly while doing so! The "orchestral" side is a beautiful flow of sweet melodies, while the "small combo" side is jazzier, more improvisational. My one caveat is with the classification I see on this page. While Cleo does a great job with the up-tempo numbers, like "Write Myself a Letter" and "High-Heeled Sneakers", this album is by NO means "funk". Even calling it "soul" is a real stretch. Much as I love Cleo, these terms just don't define her. To get what I mean, check out my other favorite Cleo offering, her double-album "Porgy & Bess" with Ray Charles, one of the most soulful singers of all time. By contrast with him, Cleo is reserved, neat, almost prim. But this collaboration of opposites really WORKS!
