The Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler get everything perfectly right. The precision, the timing, the sound are all beyond praise. From the fizzing can-can to the romantic waltz, it all comes together gorgeously. The recording is top-rate. I have loved this performance for decades in all its media. Respighi created La Boutique Fantastique from an assemblage of Rossi melodies as a ballet for Diaghilev depicting a toy store filled with mechanical wonders. Fiedler gives the same attention to LA BOUTIQUE FANTASQUE, Ottorino Respighi's arrangement of music by Rossini. It's simply an enjoyable recording, perfect for those times you want something lighthearted in the CD player. I would also say that this recording is a good selection for introducing a young person to classical music.

La Boutique fantasque, also known as The Magic Toyshop or The Fantastic Toyshop, is a ballet in one act conceived by Léonide Massine, who devised the choreography for a libretto written with the artist André Derain, a pioneer of Fauvism. Derain also designed the décor and costumes for the ballet. Ottorino Respighi wrote the music based on piano pieces by Gioachino Rossini. Its world premiere was at the Alhambra Theatre in London on 5 June 1919, performed by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.

I was intrigued by the length of Fiedler's La boutique fantasque; the recorded length is 27:23 which is considerably shorter than other performances which can range from 42 to 47 minutes more or less. This is evidently a concert version which has omitted certain sections found in the complete ballet which usually runs something over 40 minutes.

There are few performances of the Offenbach/Rosenthal ballet Gaîté Parisienne to match Arthur Fiedler's delightful 1954 recording with the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the companion piece on this RCA Living Stereo reissue, the Rossini/Respighi ballet La boutique fantasque, is similarly a joy to hear again since the 1956 performance is still a classic among few competitors.
