Dolphy is heard on bass clarinet, though pianist Lalo Schifrin is featured extensively with bassist Bob Cunningham and drummer Mel Lewis prior to the leader's solo. The final track comes from an October, 1962 broadcast from the Gaslight Inn in New York. Unfortunately, the forgettable singer, Joe Carroll, takes up most of "I Got Rhythm," with the leader staying pretty much in the background except for an occasional, brief flurry on the bass clarinet. The rest of this group includes pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Richard Davis, drummer Edgar Bateman, and trumpeter Edward Armour.
Eric Allan Dolphy, Jr. (June 20, 1928 – June 29, 1964) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, bass clarinetist and flautist. On a few occasions, he also played the clarinet and piccolo. Dolphy was one of several ts to gain prominence around the time that he was active. His use of the bass clarinet helped to establish the instrument within jazz. Dolphy extended the vocabulary and boundaries of the alto saxophone, and was among the earliest significant jazz flute soloists.
