Secret life of machines remastered (2X12 lp). 100% Pure, PURELP011.

Dutch veteran Steve Rachmad's foundational debut album as Sterac, Secret Life of Machines, was re-released to great fanfare earlier this year. Part 2 leans slightly more towards house and, appropriately, the vinyl release gives pride of place to Dutch talent. 100% Pure boss 2000 and One tackles the brisk but dubby "Thera," dropping its basic melodic material into a tick-tock tech house framework and replacing the grit and urgency of the original with big room dynamics and a more measured sense of progression. Joris Voorn, meanwhile, reworks album highlight "Astronotes"-a wise choice, you'd think, given the knack for sculpting blissfully smooth atmospherics displayed in parts of his own discography.

This package shouldn't have happened. I'll focus on the Sittin' on Klaus Remix because the original of Sitting on Clouds is truly a special record. A slice of life that really can't be improved upon and was reserved for THOSE moments far after midnight where the dancefloor is at a comfortable cruising altitude, people are levitating and the song fits the moment is the tactic for djing. i.e. From the heart music and perfect music for establishing a state of perma-grin. Ricardo tries, and comes up with something. Mostly, it's gone widescreen and horizontal and has been stretched over Ricardo's trademark recent fixation with sonic belches and fits of sounds that are let loose over lazy drum programming that sounds an awful bit like the entrails from the Schnitzler Zug beat and which completely denies the upright propulsion that made the original rock it so hard. Just as the original signaled a new sophistication in Techno and it accomplished something which was unique and very European, it also made no fuss about how heavily indebted it was to its Detroit roots while creating both a horizontal space and a vertical space that was truly mind blowing when it first came out. It wasn't just the cadences bubbling up and over your body that made it so special. It was also how heavily the original leaned on what made the early Detroit sound of Rhythim is Rhythim so rock your box funky. It was its percussion and how it was also crawling all over your body. I'm decidedly let down. This is shuffling placeholder music for people who are too out of mind to do much else but sway like trees in a light wind. It's not special moment music that will rock your box whilst simultaneously massaging your mind and it won't make you want to stare up at the dj while shaking your head going: "you beast! what are you doing to me?" I love that bass line though.
