Released April 12, 1994. Live Through This Tracklist. Considered by many to be their magnum opus, Live Through This, Hole’s second studio album following Pretty On the Inside (1991), was met with much acclaim: critics praised Courtney Love’s crooning as she sings of life’s pressures and her own personal challenges. Many of her lyrics cover deeply-rooted emotions, spanning topics such as motherhood, depression, child abuse, and self-image, as well as her transcendence over her personal issues.
That is one of the reasons why Live Through This sounds so shockingly different from Pretty on the Inside, but the real reason is Love's desire to compete in the same commercial alternative rock arena as her husband, Kurt Cobain. In fact, many rumors have claimed that Cobain ghostwrote a substantial chunk of the album, and while that's unlikely, there's no denying that his patented stop-start dynamics, bare chords, and punk-pop melodies provide the blueprint for Live Through This.
King, ‘Live in Cook County Jail’. King was enjoying a career renaissance when he played this Chicago jail in 1970. The third album by Jack and Meg White was the right dynamite for a mainstream breakthrough. Jack’s Delta-roadhouse fantasies, Detroit-garage-rock razzle and busted-love lyricism, as well as Meg’s toy-thunder drumming all peaked at once. By their fifth album, Kiss were the most popular band in America, with sold-out stadium tours and eventually their own pinball machine, makeup line and a TV movie. Built around the proto power ballad Beth, this is a ridiculously over-the-top party-rock album that just gets better with age. Listen here.

Album · 1994 · 12 Songs. Live Through This is one of the best rock albums of the ’90s, full stop. Released at the height of the grunge boom, it mixes punk ferocity with catchy jangle-pop, and contains some of the most potent feminist lyrics to ever find their way onto the radio. Miss World" smuggles its confrontational lines within easy-to-digest hooks, while the monster choruses and dynamics of "Violet" and "Doll Parts" established Courtney Love as a songwriting force to be reckoned with, drama be damned. Live Through This Hole.
Hole’s second album, Live Through This, famously came out four days after Love’s husband Kurt Cobain was found dead at their home in Seattle. The sudden tragedy threatened to swallow the music, to say nothing of the genre and social movement in which it was encased. As much as it concerns trauma and misogyny, Live Through This, like all great rock records, quakes with desire. Love deciphers what it means to be an object of desire, but she also plays a woman who wants ravenously. Her wanting, at the time, was a terror; she inspired so much vitriol in part because she refused to be passive, refused to accommodate a man’s hunger without indulging her own.
