Besides being one of the most dynamic acts on the soul circuit of the late '60s and early '70s, the Chi-Lites also had an enviable range, which took them from intelligent protest firestorms like "(For God's Sake) Give More Power to the People" and "We Are Neighbors" to the velvet-smooth ballads "I Want to Pay You Back" and. "Have You Seen He. (Even more impressive then, that each of those four excellent songs first appeared on the same album, 1971's Give More Power to the People. The Chi Lites were a second tiered group, they were a quality soul group yet they did not have as many hits as the Temptations, Four Tops or other more prominent groups. What I like about them is that, out of completely nowhere, they would inject these psychodelic and fuzzed out guitar riffs, the phatest bass lines of the era and I love that guy with the deep, I mean DEEP voice. The Chi-Lites most off-beat A-side single, "My Heart Just Keeps On Breakin'," sandwiched in-between the 1973 hits "A Letter to Myself" and "Stoned Out of My Mind," is an all-out fiddle-driven original country tune! Despite being wholly delightful, it unsurprisingly didn't find much of an audience, and fans were glad to pounce on "Stoned Out of My Mind" when it came out. If one listens carefully, one can hear that their biggest hit "Oh Girl" has a bit of a country-ballad flavor to it.
