Alexander Zemlinsky or Alexander von Zemlinsky (14 October 1871 – 15 March 1942) was an Austrian composer, conductor, and teacher. Zemlinsky was born in Vienna to a highly diverse family. Zemlinsky's grandfather, Anton Semlinski, emigrated from Žilina, Hungary (now in Slovakia) to Austria and married an Austrian woman. Both were from staunchly Roman Catholic families, and Alexander's father, Adolf, was raised as a Catholic
Zemlinsky colours, punctuates and informs the drama with orchestral material and Jurowski and the LPO certainly make this count. The orchestra is on terrific form, really bringing Zeminsky's rich sound world and Secessionist harmonies to lif. his is a fascinating disc with a pair of highly dramatic and still neglected works. Jurowski conducts with a sure sense of cumulative momentum, drawing playing from the LPO that pointedly underlines the music's pivoting between Romanticism and modernity.
CD: Jurowski conducts Zemlinsky. LPO conducted by Vladimir Jurowski. Zemlinsky A Florentine Tragedy: Heike Wessels mezzo soprano (Bianca) Sergey Skorokhodov tenor (Guido Bardi) Albert Dohmen baritone (Simone). Zemlinsky Six Maeterlinck Songs: Petra Lang mezzo soprano. Vladimir Jurowski conductor London Philharmonic Orchestra Pieter Schoeman leader. The orchestra revel in the heady late-Romantic textures, and the sound is recorded very well so as to give the lush textures space to breathe.
Zemlinsky alway suprises me with his brilliance and beauty. But, frankly, I don't think he was cut out for comedy. His librettist, Leo Feld, had a thing for making fun of average folks. Not that the score isn't full of great ideas and complex, well thought out music-Zemlinsky was a conscientious artist. But the music is wildly dense and dissonant for satire. All this isn't helped by the fact that Zemlinsky cut and revised the score in the 1920s, adding passages of even greater dissonance. Der Traumgorge" before it, and "Eine Florentinische Tragodie" and "Der Zwerg" after it are among the great operatic works of the 20th century, but with "Kleider machen leute" Zemlinsky had a bit of an off day.
