Audio CD, October 30, 2001. Oscar Hammerstein's words are not heard - at least on the album - but they're so ingrained into most of our psyches that it's impossible not to 'hear' them in your head. Most of the overtures are presented in their original orchestrations by the genius Richard Russel Bennett. Wouldn't it be great to see some of these shows restaged - including the 'ones that got away' like Allegro and Pipe Dream?
Many New York Public Library staff members contributed greatly to this homage to Richard Rodgers. Special appreciation goes to Christopher Frith, Amy Schwegel, and Patricia Rader for their dedication to this project. Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart began their collaborative career in 1919 when the song, Any Old Place with You, was sung in the show, A Lonely Romeo. From 1945-1959, the Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration produced the American musical classics Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and the Sound of Music. Many of the shows were designed by the scenic artist, Jo Mielziner, who achieved a distinctive look in the décor. They achieved such success that all were made into motion pictures and reached worldwide audiences. The acclaimed and profitable partnership ended with Oscar Hammerstein’s death in 1960.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, this beloved musical boasts a score that features such classic songs as Getting to Know You, I Whistle a Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers, Shall We Dance and Something Wonderful. Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.
