Alpha Centauri ‎(LP, Album). If not quite as distinctive as the albums that came immediately before and after it, Alpha Centauri is nevertheless a strong work of '70s kosmiche music and a fascinating chapter in the ongoing story of Tangerine Dream. This issue comes complete with both sides of 1971's Ultima Thule single, the a-side of which is possibly the biggest anomaly in the TD catalogue (a somewhat conventional sounding progressive rock instrumental) and a live recording from the same year, which make it a particularly worthwhile purchase.

As if the sound is breaking through your speakers, Alpha Centauri begins its journey. Like a call to psychedelic arms, the first track "Sunrise in the Third System" marches on with its organ. The mixing of the three tracks found on Alpha Centauri leaves something to be desired, in that the tracks are not mixed the way they would be today with each track endlessly flowing into the next like a stream. Nonetheless, when one is not paying too close attention to such details, the album seems to flow quite smoothly.

Band Name Tangerine Dream. Album Name Alpha Centauri. Released date 02 February 1971. Labels Virgin Records. 2. Fly and Collision of Comas Sola.

1. Sunrise in the Third System. 4. Ozillator Planet Concert (Live). 5. Ultima Thule Part One.

Schnitzler's replacement was the rambunctious organist Steve Shroyder (himself a member for only one album). The trio of Froese, Franke and Shroyder (along with two guest musicians) recorded TD's second record, Alpha Centauri, and had little difficulty living up to the freaky promise of the Dream's debut. Pieces like "Sunrise In the Third System" (an organ-led mystic processional) and the single (!) "Ultima Thule Part 1" (with a very non-TD rock thud) proved the band were learning how to pour maximum mood into more compact structures.

Of Alpha, Atem, Meditation and Zeit this is my least favourite of the early period TD releases. There seems to be a lack of focus and 'gelling' in the sessions that makes the flute parts at odds with the organ (and so on). Mood and tempo are on the light and breezy side, my preference is for the brooding, suprising and more satisfying 'Zeit-like' material. Musical elements employed just don't seem wholly compatible to my ears, and this type of music is about generating an overarching feeling in the listener. Good to have as a touchstone to their roots but probably best not to start here if you are unfamiliar with their work.

This one became instantly one of my favorite "cosmic" records. Read the track titles and you know what you can expect: Intergalactic music for tripping away, even when you are not taking drugs. The music is not really complicated, but the atmosphere it creates is just incredible. "Sunrise In The Sird System" begins very slowly and maintains a steady tension with more and more strings and pulsating synth sounds. The only negative point about this track is, that it is too short. According to the title "Fly And Collision Of Coma Sola" is divided in several parts. There's an ambient part at the beginning (the flight?) that is followed by a synthesizer transition and then the last part, containing of really moving drums (the collison?). "Alpha Cebtauri" is even more incredible like the two other tracks, a beautiful, very long ambient track with some german voices as a climax, speaking about god, the cosmos and mankind. This edition of the record also contains "Ultima Thule pt.1" as a bonus track. This song doesn't really fit to the other tracks, but anyway, it's a great piece of music too, and not such easy to get as other Tangerine Dream material. It's not hard to find this record, so if you are a fan of spacey music, get it or you miss something!
