67 RUB. The intimacy and excitement is palpable, even though much of the audience had never heard these songs, let alone seen this country-blues master. But it"s the finale that"s most remarkable, even if today it sounds surreal:.

Although the attendance (and the attendant live albums) for the 1964 Newport Folk Festival was greater than any previous event, it must be said that it could not hold a candle to its most immediate predecessor. In 1963, after all, folk and the protest movement were at their peak - by 1964, both the winds of change and the forces of commerce had begun to sweep across the vista and, while there is no faulting either the commitment or the performances aired that weekend, still one can sense the mood beginning to shift.
One of six live albums issued to document the Newport Folk Festival that was staged July 26-28, 1963, The Evening Concerts, Vol. 1 effortlessly echoes the diversity of the festival itself. The recording is dominated by three performers: bluesman Mississippi John Hurt with four songs, Sam Hinton, and the queen of folk, Joan Baez, with three. It's a balance that seems peculiar today, all the more so since the highlighted performances aren't necessarily the best aired that weekend
The Newport Jazz Festival is a music festival held every summer in Newport, Rhode Island. Elaine Lorillard established the festival in 1954, and she and husband Louis Lorillard financed it for many years. They hired George Wein to organize the first festival and bring jazz to Rhode Island. Most of the early festivals were broadcast on Voice of America radio, and many performances were recorded and released as albums. In 1972, the Newport Jazz Festival was moved to New York City
At the 1963 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan had been received enthusiastically when he performed "Blowin' in the Wind" with Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, and other Festival performers. At the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan performed "With God on Our Side" and "Mr Tambourine Man". On July 26, 2015, the guitar was publicly played for the first time in fifty years during a tribute set at the Newport Folk Festival honoring the 50th anniversary of Dylan plugging in at Newport. The tribute set included Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings, Willie Watson, the New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Jason Isbell, and several others. Isbell played Dylan's guitar during the tribute set and Newport Folk Festival producer Jay Sweet was quoted as saying "Dylan's guitar is home.
