Bass Clarinet – Kazutoki Umezu. This work shows Umezu's various musical talent. For example, Umezu changes Irish trad called "The Star Of The County Down" into Japanese fisherman's folktune by his own interpretation. Or while his recording, he find the way of blowing the highest tone what is limits of possibility of bass clarinet. This highest tone is in the tune called "1970", Umezu's masterpiece. And he expresses his love of Ainu traditional in the tune called "Chakton". Chakton is a rhythm pattern of Ainu music.

The bass clarinet is a musical instrument of the clarinet family. Like the more common soprano B♭ clarinet, it is usually pitched in B♭ (meaning it is a transposing instrument on which a written C sounds as B♭), but it plays notes an octave below the soprano B♭ clarinet. Bass clarinets in other keys, notably C and A, also exist, but are very rare (in contrast to the regular A clarinet, which is quite common in classical music).

Kazutoki Umezu at Cologne, September 2012. Background information. He plays both electric bass and double-bass. Jones started on drums as a child and first began playing bass guitar at age 12. At age 18 he added double bass, studying under Lisle Atkinson, and he took a bachelor's degree in music education at Jersey City State College in 1986. In the late 1980s he worked regularly with Dave Tronzo and Jim Nolet, and played in the Jazz Passengers and in groups led by Marc Ribot. Guests included guitarist Marc Ribot, harpist Zeena Parkins, clarinet player Don Byron and saxophone players George Cartwright and Kazutoki Umezu and many others. The trio's music was entirely improvised, but typically quite melodic, and even funky. With Cora's death in 1998, Third Person effectively dissolved.
