The Bothy Band was an Irish traditional band from the 1970s, one of the most prominent from the roots revival of that era. Its members were: Matt Molloy - flute and tin whistle; Paddy Keenan - uillean pipes and tin whistle; Dónal Lunny - bouzouki, guitar, and production; Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill - harpsichord, clavinet and vocals; and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill - guitar and vocals. The initial lineup had Paddy Glackin on fiddle as well as Tony Mac Mahon on accordion.

Three years later, Mícheál's sister, Irish pianist and vocalist Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, who performed with her brother in Skara Brae, Relativity, and the Bothy Band, and Irish-American flutist Brian Dunning joined the original duo. Nightnoise, the band, was born.

But The Bothy Band was such a standout that I got all their albums (alas, too few) and when audio tapes replaced LPs, I bought them all again, and when CDs replaced tapes, I bought them all AGAIN. and if another format arrives, you can be sure they'll be first on my list. The passion, the energy, the loveliness of the music are simply overwhelming. The Bothy Band lasted only a few years in the mid-1970's, but its influence on contemporary Irish music is indelible. Its personnel went on to distinguished careers: the O Domhnaill brother-and-sister team anchored the groups Relativity and Nightnoise, Tommy Peoples (who appeared with the Bothies on this album only) made a number of solo and duo recordings, Kevin Burke (who succeeded him) has recorded with several groups including his own Patrick Street, and Matt Molloy joined the Chieftains.

In the three years the Bothy Band were together, they emerged as one of the exciting bands in Celtic history. Although much of their repertoire was rooted in the traditional music of Ireland, their enthusias. ead Full Biography.

The Bothy Band was an Irish traditional band active during the mid 1970s. It quickly gained a reputation as one of the most influential bands playing Irish traditional music. Their enthusiasm and musical virtuosity had a significant influence on the Irish traditional music movement that continued well after they disbanded in 1979. The Bothy Band was formed in 1975 by bouzouki player Dónal Lunny, after he left the group Planxty to form his own record company, Mulligan.

The Bothy Band – an incendiary mix of driving folk-rock rhythms fused with complex contrapuntal layers of harmonic curiosity and robust melodic skill. As individuals and as a collective they drew from the deep well of traditional Irish music, but The Bothy Band were more than just a trad band. Their debut 1975 was a game-changer of an album for music fans and music makers of the time. They opened the door to so much of the innovation that was to come, laying the foundations for groups like Lúnasa, Altan and Dervish who continued and expanded on their blueprint.
