Africa/Brass is the eighth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Impulse! Records, catalogue A-6. The sixth release for the fledgling label and Coltrane's first for Impulse!, it features Coltrane's working quartet augmented by a larger ensemble to bring the total number of participating musicians to 21. Its big band sound, with the unusual instrumentation of French horns and euphonium, presented music very different from anything that had been associated with Coltrane to date.

Quite a different album than usual for John Coltrane, but a classic one too – and a set that has the great one exploring his ideas in a set of longer tracks recorded with an expanded jazz orchestra! The format's hardly the mainstream big band of the time – as Coltrane's filled the group with very hip players – including Booker Little, Freddie Hubbard, Julian Priester, and Eric Dolphy – in addition to usual compatriots who include McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, and Elvin Jones
The title track takes up the entire first half of the album, and stands as one of Coltrane's greatest works. It can be described as a song where nothing is really going on while everything is happening at once. Throughout its various permutations, from dusky and moody to explosive and celebratory, it remains anchored by the one chord drone of the bass, twisting and turning in mood, exploring the endless possibilities of that one chord without ever seeming monotonous or creatively exhausted
