Artist: Lena Susanne Norin, Hermann Max Title: Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach – Cassandra Year Of Release: 2000 Label: CPO Genre: Classical, Baroque Cantata Quality: APE (image+. Cassandra" is a relatively early composition, showing both the mastery of musical vocabulary he'd acquired from his father and the inspired innovations he learned from the fine Italian musicians he met in Bückeburg, some of them students of the great Baldassare Galuppi of Venice. The result is a uniquely complex cantata, belonging more to the Gluck & Mozart future than to the baroque.

Das Kleine Konzert & Rheinische Kantorei. Hermann Max. Mária Zádori (soprano), Lena S. Norin (mezzo-soprano), Guy de Mer (tenor) & Klaus Mertens (baritone). Bach, J C F: Miserere in C. Das Kleine Konzert & Rheinische Kantorei. Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was a child of his times, which were characterised by new beginnings and profound changes in the political and cultural arena as well as in the societal and philosophical spheres. The Miserere and the motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme on this recording beautifully document these transformations. MDG is now presenting an archive production that has achieved historic status

Lena Susanne Norin: After many years abroad Lena Susanne Norin returned to live in Sweden, but the greatest part of her work is still on the continent, and her work as a concert soloist has taken her to many different European countries. She has worked and recorded for radio and the gramophone with many of Europe's most well known ensembles and conductors of early music, for example, Sequentia, the Ferrara Ensemble (Crawford Young), La Chapelle Royale, Rheinische Kantorei (Hermann Max), Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Musica Antiqua Köln, Cantus Cölln and René Jacobs, and Akantus.
Das Kleine Konzert plays with ease, verve, and accuracy, and Hermann Max has a terrific feel for this après-Baroque, Classically Mozartean music, bringing its crisp rhythms to life. Little stage effects present on this live recording are welcome: When a clash of arms is referred to in the text, we hear swords. Except for applause at the opera's close, the audience could be mummified. The chorus too is excellent. The music throughout is inventive and expert.
