They might have sounded like New York's unorthodox thrash metal/punk outfit the Cro-Mags, whose Best Wishes rocks ferociously while expressing a very Hindu viewpoint. The CD's cover contains some distinctly Indian art, and songs like "Age of Quarrel," "Crush the Demoniac," and "Days of Confusion" were clearly inspired by the Bhagavad-Gita and other Hindu scriptures. The New Yorkers may see the violent, chaotic world around them as a living hell, but their overall message is one of hope and optimism
Best Wishes is the second album by New York hardcore band, Cro-Mags. It was released on April 26, 1989 on Profile Records and was subsequently re-released on Another Planet – along with their debut album, The Age Of Quarrel, on the same disc. Cro-Mags were the band that if you knew were walking down the block, you would hear doors being locked, window curtains being closed and babies start crying with mothers trying to quiet them. They were the real deal and alternatively they were the most spiritual of all the bands. New York hardcore with the teachings of Hare Krishna? Nobody ever accused of the Cro-Mags not thinking outside of the box. "Age of Quarrel". Best Wishes" for the lack of better word represents a time that was coming to an end as well. It's almost like the last golden crossover thrash/hardcore whatever album of the 80's. There were plenty of bands with their gems; Cryptic Slaughter, Wehrmacht, . DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, et. tc. Majority of them also started out as hardcore-punk bands and like the Cro-Mags also were considered the founding fathers of their respective scenes.
Age of Quarrel singer John Joseph parted ways with the band for the first time after Age of Quarrel, leaving bass player Harley Flanagan to sing on the following Cro-Mags release, Best Wishes (1989), which had a more heavy metal-influenced sound. The next record Alpha Omega saw the return of Joseph singing along with Flanagan. On June 28th, 2019 Cro-Mags released their first new music in 20 years, sharing three new songs Don’t Give In, Drag You Under and No One’s Victim. Flanagan is preparing a new Cro-Mags album with producer, Arthur Rizk for a planned 2019 release date. Cro-Mags are reportedly working on a new album - their first since 2000’s Revenge - and they’re set to open for the Misfits during their four upcoming shows: June 29th in Los Angeles, September 7th in Denver, September 11th in Oakland and September 14th in Seattle.
